"It's simply amazing that the money will be raised for young people in particular."

Sleep Out is our largest fundraising event of the year. Campaigning to end youth homelessness, the event challenges people to spend one night outside so local young people don’t have to. The money raised at Sleep Out helps to support local vulnerable young people, who may not have had the best start in life, to take their next steps towards independence and to finally feel hopeful of a better future. Sleep Out does not aim to replicate homelessness, but it does give participants just a small glimpse of some of the challenges homeless people may face.

WS Training is one of the organisations supporting Ipswich Sleep Out this year. They have a team of eleven people of who have signed up to spend one night outside and we are thrilled they are joining us for this year’s event which takes place at Ipswich Town Football Club on Portman Road. We spoke to Catherine Garnham, one of the WS Training Sleep Out team to hear all about their Sleep Out challenge.

“This is our first Sleep Out.” Catherine explains. “I shared the event as youth homelessness is something that some of our students sadly experience so we wanted to do our bit to help towards tackling the issue.

We are a Private Training Provider for post-16 students with SEND whereby we deliver educational courses to help them develop their skills into adulthood or employment. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and often face difficulties with home life. We encourage our students to give back to the community and help where they can and often take part in projects to help local charities. We felt it was time us staff did something amazing together to raise awareness and show our support to something that impacts our students.

“We are looking forward to supporting each other through the challenge and leaning on each other to help and encourage us all to get through the night. We are expecting to gain an insight into the challenges young people are faced with. Although we have an idea of what they experience, this will widen our eyes to how it feels to be out on the streets in the cold. We are going to gather lots of warm clothes and get a good night’s sleep the night before! Our Sleep Out must-haves are thick socks, a wooly hat, sleeping bag, thick coat, gloves and a pillow!”

WS Training had a flying start to their fundraising and have made the most of JustGiving’s online fundraising resources by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them for their Sleep Out challenge.

“JustGiving has made it much easier to fundraise and we have been able to share the link on our personal and work social pages.” Catherine continues. “We were surprised to raise the majority of our money in the first 2 days and we are hoping to raise £1,400.

It’s simply amazing that the money will be raised for young people in particular. This is the age group we work with and often find they are overlooked. It’s such a great cause, which is helping to tackle youth homelessness, something which is impacting more and more younger people.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to support such a great cause as a team and really forward to the team spirit of all involved on the night.”
