Decorating Butterfly House

We are proud to be the eastern region member charity of End Youth Homelessness, a UK-wide movement of local charities that have joined forces to tackle homelessness together.

Kier, a leading provider of construction and infrastructure services, announced their support in 2022 for EYH as a corporate charity partner. This two-year partnership supports the charity’s aim of ending youth homelessness on a national scale, to give vulnerable young people a future. The Kier Foundation, an independently registered charity that support Kier’s charity partner, has worked with EYH to create a new campaign ‘Shaping Futures’. The campaign has three objectives:

  • Shaping Lives: to raise £200,000 to fund employment, education and training programmes that will give 1-2-1, tailored support to 160 homeless young people across the UK;
  • Shaping Homes: donating ‘gift in kind’ donations of up to £10,000 to support and help EYH member charities through volunteering and the renovation of youth hostels and homes;
  • Shaping Careers: by providing opportunities for young homeless people through work experience and apprentices on local projects spanning the UK.

We were thrilled when a team from Kier Eastern & Midlands offered to volunteer their time and energy to give Butterfly House, one of our services in West Norfolk, a new lease of life by lending their decorating and repair skills. Butterfly House is a Supported Living accommodation based in King’s Lynn for young people aged 18-25 who require support to live independently whilst managing a mental health condition, behavioural difficulties and/or similar vulnerabilities.

Karen Buckle, Registered Manager of Butterfly House said: “The Butterfly House bungalow paintwork was in need of repair – the corridor colour made the hallway very dark and unappealing. Kier have made a huge difference giving it a lighter colour and lifting the whole appearance of the hall way and bedrooms. They went above expectations and fulfilled repainting the whole bungalow to give it a new clean fresh look. They also made a new resident feel valued by redecorating her room in the colour of her choice.

“They were very friendly and communicated with residents the whole time and did not cause them any interruption to their daily life. This has helped the young adults immensely with mental health and they are now looking forward to choosing pictures for all the newly decorated areas. Kier kindly brought in doughnuts for all on their last day too, which was very much appreciated!”

Kier Contracts Manager Matthew Chillingsworth: said: “Kier is extremely happy to have been able to help with these important redecoration and repair works at Butterfly House. Helping to improve the young adults’ living spaces was extremely rewarding, and we hope the residents and The Benjamin Foundation will make positive use out of the improvements for many years to come.”
