"Knowing that the money raised goes directly to support those who live locally is so important and a big reason why I choose to fundraise for The Benjamin Foundation."

Sleep Out is our largest fundraising event of the year. Campaigning to end youth homelessness, the event challenges people to spend one night outside so local young people don’t have to. The money raised at Sleep Out helps to support local vulnerable young people, who may not have had the best start in life, to take their next steps towards independence and to finally feel hopeful of a better future. Sleep Out does not aim to replicate homelessness, but it does give participants just a small glimpse of some of the challenges homeless people may face.

James Wright is one of the people who will be taking part in Norwich Sleep Out at Carrow Road on Thursday 11th November. Part of a unique club, James has taken part in all six of our Norwich Sleep Out events! We spoke to him about the event which brings him back year after year:

“Having seen info for the first Sleep Out, it felt like something practical to support a local charity that does such great work with young people at risk of homelessness.” James explains.

“I have always been taken with just how vulnerable people must feel sleeping out in the open. At Sleep Out there are always people up to keep an eye on us, but I find the sleep is disrupted when I hear unexpected noises. To anyone new to Sleep Out – just sign up, get ready to meet new people and remember that we are all there to raise money for such an amazing organisation.”

With fundraising an important part of Sleep Out, we’ve been asking participants to share their top tips about how to encourage those all important donations towards their challenge.

James continues: “As someone who is often a bit ‘last minute’ I find the online platforms brilliant at bringing in those donations. Social media is great during the event, particularly with video. People are really generous on the night when the weather is not so good…”

And James’ ‘must-have’ Sleep Out clothing? “Thick socks, as I always find that my feet in particular always get cold.”

“Whilst there are many organisations that support young people, knowing that the money raised goes directly to support those who live locally is so important and a big reason why I choose to fundraise for The Benjamin Foundation.”

A huge thank you to James for taking part in Norwich Sleep Out 2021. Join him by taking on Sleep Out to help to end youth homelessness in Norfolk and Suffolk. Register your place today:
