Re-use Drop Off centre already demonstrating social value by avoiding waste

The Swanton Road Reuse Drop off, which opened on 8th June, is already helping to breathe new life into second hand items, avoiding waste going to landfill, creating social value and raising funds for charity.

The former Household Waste Recycling Centre at Swanton Road, Norwich is the brainchild of site owners FCC Environment in partnership with our charity and Precycle, one of the largest multi-material recyclers in Europe.

Since opening, over 100 fridges and freezers have passed through the site. Many of these are now being used to help support those in need across Norfolk via the Norfolk Assistance Scheme whom we support across the region.

As word begins to spread about the new facility in Norwich, the response from the public has been extremely positive. The site has so far seen over 2000 kilos of textiles and general bric a brac alone.

“Since opening the site we have seen visitor numbers increase daily. The feedback I have had by meeting people on site and across social media has been really positive and it’s really encouraging that the local community are choosing the site to reuse their unwanted items. We are really grateful for this support and we look forward to more of the public donating good quality items to support this great initiative.” said Paul Sinclair, Operations Manager at The Benjamin Foundation.

The Drop Off Centre gives residents a place to bring items otherwise intended for the “tip” so they can have a second chance in life. The ‘drive through’ and drop off facility also provides an easy and convenient way for the public to support reuse.

Paul continues: “We’re keen to hear from anybody who has items they wish to donate. One area we’ve found particularly popular is for those who have had a stall at a car boot sale and wish to donate good quality, unsold items. We are open on Sundays until 4pm.”

Donated items are sorted by The Benjamin Foundation and sold in our shops in Norfolk, including in our store on Oak Street in Norwich, to raise vital funds for the work we do helping children, young people and families across Norfolk and Suffolk to overcome big challenges in their lives.

The site is run by FCC Environment in partnership with The Benjamin Foundation and Precycle. The facility is large and offers easy access to the public to bring reuse donations particularly larger items such as furniture, TVs, White Goods, sports equipment, kids toys, bikes, books, electrical items and usable bric-a-brac.

Opening times are 09:00 to 16:00 Wednesday to Sunday with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
