Norfolk Superhero Announces The Benjamin Foundation as 2019 Charity Partner

We’re thrilled to share the news that Norfolk Superhero has announced The Benjamin Foundation as their nominated charity for 2019 – a partnership which will enable us to provide valuable support to young carers across the county.

Starting and finishing at Burnham Overy Staithe on the North Norfolk Coast, the Norfolk Superhero challenge is a quadrathlon consisting of a 1 mile run, 4 mile kayak, 45 mile cycle and an 8 mile run. Named after the village’s Hero Pub, the event has grown from a small band of friends to a maximum of 200 competitors, all of whom raise money to support a Norfolk based charity every year - raising in the region of £70,000 to support the nominated local good cause.

We will use funding from the 2019 Norfolk Superhero challenge to support young carers in Norfolk. Since 2014, we’ve been supporting over 350 young carers right across the county. These are young people between the ages of 6 and 18 years old who are caring for a parent or sibling with a long-term illness or disability, mental health problem, learning disability or other challenges.  The effect on them is that they are missing out on friendships and their childhood.

The young carers have been supported by our team with youth groups which take place in a safe, supportive environment.  This allows them to make friends, socialise and forget their caring responsibilities for a while.  It’s a chance to escape their day-to-day pressures and to be a child again.

Norfolk Superhero’s Sophie Ellis says:  "The Norfolk Superhero Challenge is delighted to be supporting The Benjamin Foundation as their charity for 2019. We believe they provide crucial assistance to those overlooked young people, who face difficult challenges in rural areas of Norfolk.

The importance of the charity’s aims to strengthen family bonds, prevent homelessness and give the young adults and children of this area of Norfolk hope and aspiration is something that the competitors in our challenge will really want to get behind.”

Sophie continues: “We want to raise the profile of The Benjamin Foundation in their 25th anniversary year, as well as more specifically, much needed funds which will go to help support young people who are acting as carers for other family members.”

Chris Elliott, The Benjamin Foundation’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager says: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the charity partner for the Norfolk Superhero event in 2019.

“Money raised will help us continue providing valuable support to young carers, giving them part of their childhood back and a chance to build friendships and take part in activities which they may otherwise miss out on.”

Taking place half way through our 25th anniversary year, the 2019 Norfolk Superhero challenge will be held on 22nd June. A huge thank you to the Norfolk Superhero team and all the 2019 competitors - we can’t wait to work with you!
