"It’s going to be an amazing feeling once I’ve done the night and have helped prevent others having to sleep out every night."
Sleep Out is our largest fundraising event of the year. Campaigning to end youth homelessness, the event challenges people to spend one night outside so local young people don’t have to. The money raised at Sleep Out helps to support local vulnerable young people, who may not have had the best start in life, to take their next steps towards independence and to finally feel hopeful of a better future.
Sleep Out does not aim to replicate homelessness, but it does give participants a deeper understanding of some of the challenges homeless people may face.
Fern is one of the people taking part in this year’s Ipswich Sleep Out. which is taking place on Thursday 4th November at Ipswich Town Football Club.
“I first heard about Sleep Out through my sister; she found it and said she was getting involved. As soon As I heard about it I was very intrigued and wanted to get involved as well.” Fern explains.
Having not taken part before, and not knowing anyone who has participated in Sleep Out before, Fern says she is looking forward to meeting everyone and proving to herself that she can spend one night outside.
“I’m worried about the cold as I feel the cold a lot but luckily I won’t feel as vulnerable as we are all together and safe. Unlike real homeless youth. I’m going to try and sleep a lot ready to say awake all night. I’m also going to layer up and eat lot of snacks!”
Sleep Out participants are asked to raise money for their Sleep Out challenge by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them. The money they raised can help local young people to take those all-important steps to independence and to help the homeless problem we often see on the streets from getting worse.
“Fundraising is going well so far.” Fern continues, “I’m mostly posting on my social media and from this getting donations from friends and family. I’m using JustGiving and I have linked it in my Instagram bio so it’s easy to find. My goal is £100 but anything is amazing and will make a difference.”
“It’s going to be an amazing feeling once I’ve done the night and have helped prevent others having to sleep out every night.”
Fern also encourages others to sign up to take part in Ipswich Sleep Out 2021.
“It’s an amazing thing to do and it will give you the closest feeling to how young homeless people feel without facing everything they face. You don’t know what it’s like until you do it yourself.”
