EMR Metal Recycling ‘Young Futures Reimagined’ support helping young people in Norfolk
For over 25 years’ children, young people and families across Norfolk and Suffolk have been supported by The Benjamin Foundation to overcome big challenges in their lives.
Each night the charity accommodates over 100 vulnerable young people, equating to over 40,000 safe nights sleep a year so they can finally feel safe from youth homelessness. The Benjamin Foundation also helps young people to learn important life skills such as shopping, cooking and managing their money and, with the support of a Job Coach young people are able to develop career aspirations and access training, education or employment to enable them to go on to forge successful independent lives.
In May 2021, we were delighted to receive a £2,000 donation through EMR Metal Recycling’s ‘Young Futures Reimagined’ scheme to enable local young people in our charity’s housing and homelessness services to access online courses to improve their employment prospects.
Chloe* age 22 has lived at one of our accommodation centres in Norfolk for just over seven months and is one of the young people who has benefitted from the generosity of EMR Group as she takes her next steps towards independence.
“At The Benjamin Foundation, I like the fact that there is support as well as independence. There is always somebody here to help if needed.” Chloe explains.
“It has been really good meeting with Joe, the Job Coach. He has helped me to consider different ways to study. I looked into going to college but I just couldn’t afford it, so being able to gain qualifications online is brilliant. I’ve always loved animals so I am currently completing an online Level Two in Animal Care.”
Chloe continues: “It’s really good – there are three levels and it’s nice to look at different areas and gain lots of information about working in the sector. There are modules including handling of animals, animal rights, welfare and legislation. It’s fun to learn and easy to do online. There are recaps and tests so it mimics college and helps the learning to sink in. The tutor is available for a year but I can complete it in my own time at my own pace – and it hasn’t cost me anything. I’m hoping to eventually go to university to study Zoology or find at job in the sector, like working with animals at a zoo.
“Thank you to EMR Metal Recycling for giving young people like me the opportunity to gain qualifications, even when life has created barriers for us.”
